Universitas Andalas and Sorsogon State University Strengthen Partnership for Academic Mobility and Research Collaboration
Padang, 18 August 2026
Padang — Universitas
Andalas (UNAND) and Sorsogon State University (SorSU), the Philippines, are
moving forward to strengthen their international academic partnership through
student and faculty mobility, joint research, visiting lecturer programs,
curriculum benchmarking, and other collaborative academic initiatives.
The exploratory meeting
brought together representatives of both universities to identify concrete and
mutually beneficial programs following the cooperation agreement established
between the two institutions. The discussion marked an important step toward
translating the institutional partnership into implementable academic and
research activities.
Universitas Andalas was
represented by Muhammad Makky, Director of Cooperation and Research
Downstreaming of Universitas Andalas, along with other UNAND representatives.
Sorsogon State University was represented by Dr. Maria Elena Demdam from the
International Relations Office, together with academic leaders and
representatives from SorSU's main campus, Castilla Campus, and Bulan Campus.
During the meeting, Dr.
Maria Elena Demdam highlighted the importance of identifying practical areas of
cooperation that could generate tangible benefits for students, faculty
members, researchers, and both institutions. The potential initiatives
discussed included student mobility, faculty exchange, visiting lecturer
programs, joint research, curriculum benchmarking, and jointly organized
academic activities.
Mapping Academic Programs
for Future Collaboration
Representatives of
Sorsogon State University presented academic programs offered across its
campuses, covering agriculture, business and management, engineering, health
sciences, and graduate studies, including public administration.
In agriculture,
representatives from SorSU's College of Agriculture at Castilla Campus
introduced several programs, including Animal Science, Crop Science, Agribusiness,
Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, and Technical-Vocational Teacher
Education.
The discussion identified
several academic areas with similarities and potential complementarity between
SorSU and Universitas Andalas. These similarities provide a strong foundation
for curriculum mapping and the development of academic mobility programs with
possible credit recognition.
Both universities also
discussed the possibility of initially selecting one or two priority areas to
ensure that the partnership can move quickly from institutional-level
agreements to concrete activities involving relevant faculties, departments,
and study programs.
Advancing Student and
Faculty Mobility
Student and faculty
mobility emerged as one of the key areas of potential cooperation. Sorsogon
State University shared its experience in international mobility and its plans
to develop full-semester mobility opportunities with academic credit
arrangements.
UNAND and SorSU also
explored opportunities for faculty exchanges and visiting lecturer programs.
These initiatives would allow academics from both institutions to share
expertise, strengthen teaching and learning practices, develop international
classroom experiences, and identify new areas for collaborative research.
The universities also
recognized curriculum benchmarking as an important mechanism for strengthening
academic quality. Through closer engagement between comparable study programs,
both institutions can exchange good practices, identify opportunities for curriculum
enhancement, and facilitate future student mobility and credit transfer.
Expanding the
International Research Network
Beyond academic mobility,
the partnership is expected to contribute to the expansion of the International
Research Network of Universitas Andalas.
Through
faculty-to-faculty engagement, UNAND and SorSU can identify common research
interests and develop joint research projects, collaborative publications,
academic seminars, research exchanges, and other scholarly activities.
The involvement of
academic units in agriculture, engineering, business, health sciences, and
other related disciplines also provides opportunities for multidisciplinary
research addressing shared regional and global challenges.
Strengthening these
researcher-to-researcher connections is expected to expand UNAND's
international research network while creating opportunities for sustainable
institutional collaboration beyond short-term mobility activities.
Supporting UNAND's
Strategic Direction on Internationalization and Academic Excellence
The partnership with
Sorsogon State University is aligned with the strategic direction of
Universitas Andalas, particularly in strengthening internationalization and
academic excellence.
International mobility,
visiting lecturer programs, curriculum benchmarking, and joint academic
activities will contribute to increasing international exposure for UNAND
students and faculty members. At the same time, academic engagement with an
overseas partner provides opportunities to benchmark educational practices and
enhance the quality and international relevance of academic programs.
Joint research and
scholarly collaboration will further strengthen UNAND's international research
network by connecting researchers across institutions and creating
opportunities for international publications, collaborative research projects,
seminars, and other academic outputs.
Through this approach,
international partnership is positioned not merely as an institutional
agreement but as an instrument to generate measurable academic and research
outcomes. The collaboration therefore supports UNAND's broader strategic agenda
to strengthen its global engagement, academic quality, research capacity, and
international visibility.
Contributing to the
Sustainable Development Goals
The prospective
collaboration between Universitas Andalas and Sorsogon State University also
contributes to the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs), particularly:
- SDG 4 – Quality
Education: Student and faculty mobility, visiting lecturer programs, curriculum
benchmarking, and academic exchanges contribute to improving access to
international learning experiences and strengthening the quality of higher
education.
- SDG 9 – Industry,
Innovation and Infrastructure: Joint research, particularly in agriculture,
engineering, technology, and other applied fields, can encourage innovation and
the development of research-based solutions to societal and economic
challenges.
- SDG 17 – Partnerships
for the Goals: The institutional partnership directly strengthens international
cooperation, knowledge exchange, research networks, and capacity building
between higher education institutions in Indonesia and the Philippines.
Depending on the specific
joint research themes developed in the next phase, the collaboration also has
the potential to contribute to other SDGs, including SDG 2 – Zero Hunger
through agricultural research and education, SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being
through collaboration in health sciences, and SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic
Growth through business, entrepreneurship, skills development, and
academic-industry-oriented initiatives.
Moving from Agreement to
Implementation
As a follow-up, Sorsogon
State University will conduct internal consultations to identify priority
programs for the initial phase of collaboration. Potential areas include
agriculture, business, engineering, and health sciences. SorSU is also expected
to share its academic calendar with Universitas Andalas to facilitate the alignment
of mobility and other academic activities.
Universitas Andalas will
disseminate the outcomes of the meeting to relevant faculties, schools,
departments, and study programs to identify potential counterparts and prepare
concrete proposals for collaboration.
Both universities agreed
to arrange follow-up meetings involving the relevant academic units. These
meetings are expected to focus on curriculum mapping, priority program
selection, mobility arrangements, and potential joint research initiatives.
Through these next steps,
Universitas Andalas and Sorsogon State University aim to transform their
institutional partnership into sustainable academic and research collaboration
with tangible outcomes for students, faculty members, and researchers.
The partnership
represents another step in Universitas Andalas' commitment to
internationalization and academic excellence while expanding its International
Research Network and contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable
Development Goals through meaningful global partnerships.
