Universitas Andalas Strengthens Education Partnership with Padang Education Office and Chinese Universities to Support SDGs

Padang – Universitas Andalas
organized a strategic discussion with the Padang City Education Office to
explore collaboration opportunities in education, particularly in developing
double degree programs with partner universities in China. The meeting was held
on April 7, 2026, at the Senate Meeting Room, 4th Floor, Rectorate Building of
Universitas Andalas.
The discussion aimed to
strengthen synergy between higher education institutions and local government
in enhancing education quality and expanding international academic
collaboration. One of the key focuses was the development of double degree
programs involving Universitas Andalas, the Padang Education Office, and
universities in China, which is expected to open broader access to global
learning opportunities for students.
This initiative aligns with the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 on quality education
by improving access to international academic programs, and SDG 17 on
partnerships by fostering collaboration between universities, government
institutions, and international partners. In addition, the program contributes
to SDG 8 by preparing highly skilled graduates with global competencies.
The Rector of Universitas
Andalas, Dr. Efa Yonnedi, SE, stated that the collaboration reflects the
university’s commitment to strengthening education quality through
international engagement. He emphasized that partnerships involving local
government and global institutions are essential in creating inclusive and
competitive education systems that benefit both students and society.
The Vice Rector I of Universitas
Andalas, Prof. Dr. Syukri Arief, M.Eng highlighted the importance of academic
development and curriculum alignment in supporting international programs such
as double degrees. He noted that such initiatives will enhance academic
standards and provide students with broader educational experiences.
The Vice Rector II of
Universitas Andalas, Dr. Hefrizal Handra, M.Soc.Sc, emphasized the need for
institutional readiness, including financial planning and resource management,
to ensure the sustainability of international collaboration programs. He stated
that strategic planning is crucial to maximize the benefits of such
partnerships.
The Vice Rector IV, Prof.
Henmaidi, underlined that international collaboration is a key driver in
strengthening the university’s global positioning. He explained that
initiatives like this not only expand academic networks but also contribute to
building a strong institutional reputation aligned with global development
goals.
The Director of Cooperation and
Research Commercialization, Dr. Eng. Muhammad Makky, added that the
collaboration provides an important pathway for integrating academic programs
with international standards. He emphasized that partnerships with foreign
universities, particularly in China, can enhance student mobility, joint
research opportunities, and long-term institutional development.
Looking ahead, Universitas
Andalas expects that this discussion will lead to concrete cooperation agreements
and the implementation of double degree programs in the near future. The
collaboration is anticipated to strengthen academic quality, expand
international exposure for students, and contribute to sustainable development
through education, innovation, and global partnerships.
