Universitas Andalas KKN Students Develop NDVI Mapping and Administrative Maps for Smart Agriculture in Tanjung Bingkung, Supporting SDG 2 and SDG 9

Padang, 02 August 2025

Solok, August 2, 2025 — Universitas Andalas continues to support sustainable development through technological innovation in line with SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure). Students participating in the Community Service Program (KKN) introduced data-driven solutions in Nagari Tanjung Bingkung, Kubung District, Solok Regency, by developing administrative maps and NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) analysis to support smart agriculture.

The program was initiated in response to the limited availability of integrated and digital spatial data in the area. To address this, KKN students utilized satellite imagery to analyze vegetation conditions and produce NDVI maps—an indicator that reflects plant health based on vegetation greenness. This approach enables faster, more comprehensive, and objective assessment of agricultural land without relying solely on manual field observation.

In addition to NDVI mapping, the team also developed a detailed administrative map of the nagari, including territorial boundaries, subdivision of jorong (hamlets), and other spatial information. This map serves as a strategic tool for local development planning, spatial management, and evidence-based policymaking at the village level.

Through this innovation, Nagari Tanjung Bingkung now effectively has a “satellite perspective” to monitor its agricultural conditions. The NDVI map allows farmers to identify areas with declining vegetation quality, enabling targeted interventions such as fertilization, irrigation improvements, and pest control. This has the potential to increase agricultural productivity while improving resource efficiency.

The Head of Nagari Tanjung Bingkung expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting that the program provides a comprehensive and data-driven understanding of the region’s conditions. He also expressed hope that the results of this innovation could be sustained as part of the village information system and serve as a model for smart agriculture implementation in other regions of West Sumatra.

Through this initiative, Universitas Andalas demonstrates its commitment to empowering communities through technology-based solutions, strengthening local food systems, and promoting sustainable agricultural development.
