Universitas Andalas and SUSS Singapore Strengthen Academic Collaboration to Support SDGs through Student Mobility Initiative
Padang, 07 April 2026
Padang – Universitas Andalas continues to advance its internationalization efforts through a virtual meeting with Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) held on April 7, 2026. The meeting focused on discussing a proposal for academic and research collaboration, particularly in the area of student mobility.
The discussion involved Ms.
Jessie Tan from SUSS, representing the international collaboration unit. From
Universitas Andalas, the meeting was attended by Dr. Eng. Muhammad Makky,
Director of Cooperation and Research Commercialization, along with Mita
Handayani and Rafif as part of the supporting team.
The primary focus of the meeting
was to explore opportunities for student mobility programs, including student
exchange, short-term academic programs, and potential collaborative learning
initiatives. Both institutions expressed strong interest in developing structured
mobility schemes that would allow students to gain international exposure,
intercultural competencies, and global academic experience.
This initiative aligns closely
with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 on quality
education by enhancing access to international learning experiences, and SDG 17
on partnerships for the goals by strengthening collaboration between higher
education institutions across countries. Additionally, student mobility
contributes to SDG 8 by preparing graduates with global competencies relevant
to the evolving workforce.
The Vice Rector IV of
Universitas Andalas, Prof. Henmaidi, emphasized that student mobility is a key
component in building globally competitive graduates. He noted that
collaborations with institutions such as SUSS provide valuable opportunities
for students to broaden their academic perspectives and develop cross-cultural
understanding, which are essential in today’s interconnected world.
Dr. Eng. Muhammad Makky
highlighted that the meeting represents an important step toward establishing a
more concrete and impactful collaboration with SUSS. He stated that Universitas
Andalas is committed to developing mobility programs that are not only
accessible but also aligned with academic quality and institutional priorities.
He also emphasized the importance of integrating mobility programs with
research collaboration to maximize long-term benefits.
Looking ahead, both Universitas
Andalas and SUSS Singapore are expected to further develop this initial
discussion into formal agreements and implementable programs. The collaboration
is anticipated to create more opportunities for students to participate in
international academic exchanges, strengthen institutional partnerships, and
contribute to the advancement of sustainable higher education aligned with
global development goals.
