Universitas Andalas and Maqsut Narikbayev University Strengthen Global Partnership to Support SDGs through International Collaboration Initiation

Padang – Universitas Andalas continues to expand its global network by initiating academic collaboration with Maqsut Narikbayev University, Kazakhstan, through a virtual meeting held on April 6, 2026. This meeting served as an initial platform for both institutions to introduce their respective profiles and explore potential areas of cooperation.

The meeting was attended by the Director of Cooperation and Research Commercialization of Universitas Andalas, Dr. Eng. Muhammad Makky, along with the Vice Dean I of the Faculty of Economics and Business. From the Maqsut Narikbayev University side, the meeting was attended by a representative from the Unit Manager for International Cooperation and Protocol.

During the session, both institutions presented their academic strengths, institutional profiles, and potential collaboration areas. The discussion was interactive and resulted in a shared understanding of strengthening international academic cooperation, particularly in education and student mobility.

One of the key outcomes of the meeting was the agreement to proceed toward the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the near future as a formal foundation for collaboration. Both institutions also expressed strong interest in developing student exchange programs, especially in the field of economics and business, which is considered highly relevant for enhancing students’ global perspectives and academic quality.

The virtual meeting created a positive impression for both parties, reflecting aligned visions in advancing internationalization and a mutual commitment to building a sustainable academic partnership.

This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 on quality education through enhanced international academic mobility, and SDG 17 on partnerships for the goals through cross-border university collaboration.

The Vice Rector IV of Universitas Andalas, Prof. Henmaidi, stated that this collaboration initiative is part of the university’s broader internationalization strategy. He emphasized that partnerships with institutions in Central Asia open new opportunities for students and faculty to gain global academic exposure.

Dr. Eng. Muhammad Makky added that this meeting marks an important first step toward building a sustainable and impactful collaboration. He highlighted the importance of translating such partnerships into concrete programs such as student exchanges and joint academic initiatives.

The Vice Dean I of the Faculty of Economics and Business also expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, particularly in student exchange opportunities. According to him, cooperation with Maqsut Narikbayev University will enrich students’ perspectives and strengthen their readiness to face global challenges.

Looking ahead, both Universitas Andalas and Maqsut Narikbayev University are expected to formalize their collaboration through the MoU and develop concrete programs that enhance academic quality, expand global mobility, and contribute to sustainable development through higher education.
