Deaf Student Graduates from the History Program at Universitas Andalas, Reflecting the University’s Commitment to Inclusive Education in Support of SDG 4 and SDG 10
Padang, 22 November 2025
Universitas Andalas has once again demonstrated
its commitment to providing inclusive and equitable education through the
achievement of a deaf student who successfully completed her undergraduate
studies in the History Study Program, Faculty of Humanities. This accomplishment
is closely aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly
SDG 4 (Quality Education), which emphasizes inclusive and quality education for
all, and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), which encourages the reduction of
disparities in access to higher education.
Frizka Kurnia Rahman, a student of the History
Study Program in the Faculty of Humanities at Universitas Andalas, successfully
completed her studies on time within eight semesters and officially graduated
on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at the Auditorium Building of the Limau Manis
Campus, Padang. The moment was especially significant as Frizka became the
first deaf student from the History Study Program to earn a Bachelor of
Humanities degree at Universitas Andalas.
The graduation ceremony was held alongside
thousands of other graduates, yet Frizka’s presence drew special attention as a
symbol of progress in inclusive education within the university. Her success in
completing higher education demonstrated that physical limitations do not
prevent someone from achieving academic excellence.
During her four years of study, Frizka said she
was greatly supported by a positive and accommodating academic environment. The
use of projectors and clear presentation materials helped her better understand
course content, while lecturers provided detailed explanations of assignments
and guidance throughout her studies. To communicate on campus, Frizka used
various methods, including written communication, voice-to-text technology, and
assistance from communication volunteers when needed.
Frizka also observed a growing interest among
students and education staff at Universitas Andalas in learning sign language,
which she viewed as a positive sign of a more inclusive educational
environment. She expressed hope that her achievement would inspire other
persons with disabilities to pursue higher education with confidence.
Universitas Andalas Rector, Efa Yonnedi, also
expressed appreciation for her accomplishment. He stated that Frizka’s success
serves as evidence that educational opportunities must be open to everyone
without discrimination, while also reinforcing Universitas Andalas’ commitment
to building an inclusive campus for all students.
This achievement confirms that Universitas
Andalas’ efforts to create a disability-friendly educational environment are
beginning to show tangible results. With the support of learning facilities, an
open academic atmosphere, and a strong spirit of mutual support among students,
Universitas Andalas continues to strengthen its role in providing inclusive and
equitable higher education, while contributing to the achievement of SDG 4 and
SDG 10.
