Padang, 28 February 2025

Universitas Andalas has been designated by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) as a Center of Excellence for disaster management, reflecting its strategic contribution to strengthening resilience systems in line with SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). This recognition highlights the university’s role in advancing knowledge, preparedness, and response mechanisms in disaster-prone regions.

The designation was conveyed by BNPB officials during a formal engagement with Universitas Andalas in Padang, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between government institutions and academia in addressing disaster risks, particularly in West Sumatra, which is highly vulnerable to earthquakes and other natural hazards.

As a Center of Excellence, Universitas Andalas is expected to play a leading role in research, education, and capacity building related to disaster mitigation and management. This includes developing scientific studies, risk mapping, and innovative approaches to strengthen early warning systems and community preparedness.

The university has already demonstrated strong capacity in disaster-related research through interdisciplinary collaborations involving various faculties, including engineering, environmental science, and public health. These efforts contribute to more comprehensive and evidence-based disaster management strategies.

In addition, Universitas Andalas will actively support training programs, policy recommendations, and community outreach initiatives to enhance disaster awareness and preparedness at the local and regional levels.

Through this designation, Universitas Andalas is positioned to become a key hub for disaster management expertise in Indonesia, contributing to safer communities and more resilient development pathways.
