Andalas Univeristy Boosts SDG 7 and SDG 17 through Energy Fest–Solar Series for Renewable Energy Awareness

Padang, 05 February 2023

Padang, February 5, 2023 — Andalas University continues to support the global transition toward clean energy in line with SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through the organization of Energy Fest: Solar Series. The event brought together government representatives, partner institutions, and students to strengthen education and collaboration in renewable energy development.

Held at the Seminar Room of Building I, Andalas University, the event was attended by approximately 100 students with a strong interest in energy issues from various universities across West Sumatra. The activity aimed to enhance awareness and capacity among young generations in supporting sustainable energy initiatives.

The event was organized by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) in collaboration with the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR) and the Society of Renewable Energy (SRE) Andalas University, carrying the theme “Role of Solar Power in Rural Areas.” It featured several prominent speakers, including Head of the ESDM Office of West Sumatra Province Herry Martinus, representing the Vice Governor of West Sumatra, Head of the Oil and Gas Testing Center (LEMIGAS) Ariana Soemanto, and Sustainable Energy Access Program Officer at IESR, Icmi Safitri.

Ariana Soemanto emphasized the importance of youth involvement in renewable energy development. “Renewable energy must become a strong attraction for young people. They need to be challenged to explore new energy technologies and drive innovation,” she stated. She added that young people are naturally inclined to experiment and innovate, making them key actors in developing environmentally friendly technologies.

In his remarks, Herry Martinus highlighted that the acceleration of energy transition in West Sumatra is supported by regional policies, including the Governor’s Circular Letter No. 671/357/EKTL/DESDM-2022 on the utilization of rooftop solar power plants (PLTS Atap). “We support the use of solar power through this policy, and several government buildings have already adopted rooftop solar systems as backup for electricity supply,” he explained. He also expressed hope that such initiatives would continue beyond discussions and move toward real implementation.

The participation of Andalas University was also reflected through the involvement of Lendy Aditya Angga Permana from the Department of Electrical Engineering, an alumnus of the MBKM Gerilya Program under the Ministry of ESDM. He shared his motivation, stating that limited access to electricity in his hometown inspired him to engage in renewable energy development. “With better access to electricity, learning becomes easier and more opportunities can be created,” he said.

Closing the session, Icmi Safitri expressed optimism that the event would contribute to accelerating the adoption of solar energy in Indonesia. “We hope this activity will further encourage the utilization of solar energy while strengthening the capacity of human resources, particularly among the younger generation,” she concluded.

Through this initiative, Andalas University continues to strengthen its role in promoting clean energy literacy and fostering collaboration among stakeholders, contributing to a more sustainable and inclusive energy future.
